Henderson Cowboys Pull Away Late in 20-14 Scrimmage Win Over Wolfpack

The Chandler, Arizona-based Wolfpack welcomed the Henderson Cowboys from the Las Vegas, Nevada area for a competitive 13U scrimmage Saturday, bringing together youth football programs from two states.

The matchup remained close throughout, with Henderson using two touchdowns from No. 4 in the second quarter and another in the fourth to come away with a 20-14 victory.

Neither team reached the end zone during the opening quarter, but Wolfpack came close. The two teams traded field position throughout the first before Wolfpack put together a drive that moved the ball inside the Henderson 10-yard line. The Cowboys kept Wolfpack out of the end zone before the quarter came to an end, leaving the game scoreless.

The scoring opened up in the second quarter. Henderson struck first through the air when the Cowboys quarterback connected with No. 4, who took the pass 90 yards for a touchdown. No. 19 attempted to run in the extra point but was stopped, giving Henderson a 6-0 advantage.

Wolfpack answered with a touchdown from No. 6. No. 25 followed with a successful kick, worth two points under the scrimmage scoring format, putting Wolfpack ahead 8-6.

Henderson's No. 4 responded with another trip to the end zone, this time breaking free for a 20-yard rushing touchdown. No. 4 then successfully converted the extra-point run, giving the Cowboys a 13-8 lead.

Wolfpack wasn't finished. No. 25 broke a 40-yard rushing touchdown to put Wolfpack back in front. No. 25 attempted the following kick, but Henderson blocked it, leaving Wolfpack with a 14-13 advantage.

The remainder of the second quarter became much more difficult for Wolfpack offensively. The offense struggled to establish another consistent drive, while Henderson continued finding opportunities through the passing game. The Cowboys were able to advance the ball through the air but couldn't turn those later possessions into additional points before halftime.

The third quarter became a battle for field position. Neither team was able to produce a scoring drive as Wolfpack and Henderson fought primarily around the middle of the field. Both defenses prevented the opposing offense from breaking through, sending the one-point game into the fourth quarter.

Henderson eventually delivered the deciding score. No. 4 broke free for another 20-yard rushing touchdown, his third touchdown of the scrimmage. Henderson then went back to No. 4 on the conversion, connecting with him on a successful conversion pass to extend the Cowboys' advantage to 20-14.

Wolfpack was unable to answer before the end of the scrimmage, allowing Henderson to close out the six-point victory.

No. 4 accounted for all three Henderson touchdowns, producing a 90-yard receiving score and two 20-yard rushing touchdowns while also contributing on successful conversions.

Wolfpack received its scoring from No. 6 and No. 25. No. 25 delivered one of Wolfpack's biggest plays with his 40-yard rushing touchdown and also converted a two-point kick following No. 6's score.

The interstate scrimmage ultimately came down to the fourth quarter. After Chandler's Wolfpack entered the final period holding a one-point advantage, the Las Vegas-area Henderson Cowboys produced the deciding touchdown and conversion to finish with a 20-14 victory.
