Brophy, Xavier Lead 37th Annual Brophy Invitational as Cain Sets Pool Record
Brophy College Prep and Xavier-AZ led the field Saturday at the 37th Annual Brophy Invitational, with Brophy finishing atop the men's standings with 576 points and Xavier taking the women's title with 565. Millennium High School delivered a strong showing across both competitions, placing second among the women and tying Mountain Ridge for second among the men before finishing third in the combined standings with 344 points.
The meet opened with the 200-yard medley relays. Brophy College Prep's A relay captured the men's race in 1:35.90, ahead of Millennium at 1:39.34 and Mountain Ridge at 1:41.30. Xavier-AZ opened the women's competition with a victory of its own, winning the medley relay in 1:48.88. Basha followed in 1:54.85, with Saguaro third in 1:57.41.
Brophy quickly continued its success in the men's 200 freestyle. Nolan Guidry won in 1:43.08, Patrick Dunn followed at 1:44.96 and Levi Gomez completed a Brophy sweep of the top three at 1:47.45. On the women's side, Xavier's Gigi Berto captured the 200 freestyle in 1:55.30, followed by Saguaro's Gracie Sheldon at 1:57.55 and Millennium's Alania Padilla at 1:58.70.
Millennium broke through in the men's 200 IM behind Ewan Cain, who won the event in 1:53.42. Teammate Tyler Hart finished second in 1:58.14, giving Millennium the top two positions. Brophy's Phineas Conley was third in 1:58.74. Basha's Reagan Uhlik won the women's 200 IM in 2:04.64, ahead of Xavier's Ainsley Boerckel and Corona Del Sol's Tila Tometich.
The sprint events brought victories for Brophy and Mesa. Brayden Harrison won the men's 50 freestyle for Brophy in 21.60, narrowly ahead of Verrado's Elijah Wagenfehr at 21.72. Mesa's Jodi Larson took the women's 50 freestyle in 24.91, with Xavier's Gigi Berto second at 25.13 and Basha's Sophia Sontani third at 25.16.
Brophy added another win when Phineas Conley captured the men's 100 butterfly in 50.49. Xavier answered in the women's race as Ainsley Boerckel posted a winning 56.64.
Guidry returned to the top of the podium in the men's 100 freestyle, winning in 46.97 to give him individual victories in both the 200 and 100 freestyle. Millennium's Alania Padilla earned the women's 100 freestyle victory in 54.78 after previously placing third in the 200 freestyle.
Brophy controlled the men's 500 freestyle, taking all three top positions. Patrick Dunn led the way in 4:40.42, followed by Levi Gomez at 4:48.01 and Lewis O'Coyne at 4:49.69. In the women's 500 freestyle, Basha's Reagan Uhlik earned her second individual victory of the meet with a 5:02.18.
The 200 freestyle relays again showcased the strength of the meet's eventual team champions. Brophy College Prep won the men's race in 1:27.58, while Xavier-AZ captured the women's relay in 1:41.53.
Brophy's Liam Ferguson won the men's 100 backstroke in 54.16, with Millennium's Tyler Hart close behind at 54.70. Xavier's Charlie Schweikert took the women's 100 backstroke in 59.61, edging Saguaro's Maggie Hughes, who finished in 1:00.52.
One of the biggest performances of the invitational came in the men's 100 breaststroke. Millennium's Ewan Cain touched the wall in 55.97, winning the event and setting a pool record. Basha's Lukas Fortson finished second in 58.64, while Brophy's Lawrence Geer placed third in 1:00.79.
Cain said he entered the meet after dealing with illness during the previous week, which had limited his ability to practice fully. His goal remained simple: race fast and chase strong times.
After seeing 55.97 on the scoreboard, Cain said the feeling was difficult to put into words.
Millennium teammate Caleb Ellison pointed to Cain's performance when asked what made him proudest about the day.
Ellison also identified his turns as an area he wants to sharpen before Millennium's next competition, noting that improvements he made later in the meet helped him drop time.
Mountain Ridge's Alyssa Kuper won the women's 100 breaststroke in 1:07.54, followed by Arcadia's Elliot Lovill at 1:09.55 and Xavier's Joey Young at 1:10.85.
The meet concluded with the 400 freestyle relays. Brophy closed the men's competition with another victory, winning in 3:16.63. Millennium pushed Brophy closely and finished second in 3:17.65, while Mesa placed third at 3:20.25.
Basha captured the final women's event in a tight 400 freestyle relay, posting a winning 3:47.12. Saguaro was just behind at 3:47.53, while Xavier finished third in 3:54.80.
For Millennium senior Katelynn Kastanes, the invitational provided an early-season measuring point. Kastanes said her goal was to establish a baseline at the first invitational of the season and specifically targeted a 1:03 in the 100 backstroke. She finished seventh in 1:03.76.
Millennium head coach Claire Townsend came away encouraged by the team's overall performance while identifying breakouts and faster turns as areas for continued improvement.
Townsend also singled out Cain's 100 breaststroke as the performance that stood above the rest, pointing to both his individual achievement and the new pool record.
By the end of the invitational, Brophy had accumulated 576 points to win the men's competition, while Xavier amassed 565 to take the women's championship. Millennium finished second in the women's standings with 173 points and tied Mountain Ridge for second in the men's standings with 171.
Across the combined standings, Brophy finished first with 576 points, Xavier second with 565 and Millennium third with 344, closing a 22-event invitational highlighted by victories across the field and Cain's pool-record 55.97 in the 100 breaststroke.
