Ironwood Edges Barry Goldwater in Tight Battle at Cave Creek
The varsity golfers of Ironwood and Barry Goldwater squared off Tuesday afternoon at Cave Creek Golf Course, a track known for its tree-lined fairways, strategic bunkers, and a front nine that can punish mistakes as quickly as it offers scoring chances. Playing just over 3,100 yards, the par-36 layout forced both teams to grind, and in the end, it was the Ironwood Eagles who held steady and escaped with a narrow 189–196 victory.
Ironwood leaned on the calm play of junior Luca Tomasi, who paced the Eagles with a 43 (+7). Tomasi managed the opening stretch well, settling in with a par on the par-3 3rd hole and keeping his round together on the long par-5s. Behind him, fellow junior Brice Coleman posted a 46 (+10), finding rhythm late and finishing on a high note with a par on the 9th. Joshua McCormick added a 49 (+13), consistent through the middle holes, while Tarik Didic carded a 51 (+15) after battling through the tricky par-3 7th that gave much of the field trouble. Bo Coleman rounded out Ironwood’s lineup with a 54 (+18), giving the Eagles the depth they needed to close it out.
For Barry Goldwater, senior leader Everett Henson matched Tomasi for low round of the day with a 43 (+7). Henson set the tone with a par on the opening hole and stayed composed through the demanding stretch of 4, 5, and 6. Sophomore Connor Wilson backed him up with a 49 (+13), showing confidence on the par-3s, while Mathieu Dybvig-Pawelko came in at 51 (+15) and Patrick Sammon at 53 (+17) to round out the scoring four. Mason Partlow closed with a 63 (+27), keeping the Bulldogs’ card intact on a day where Cave Creek’s subtle challenges kept scores climbing.
Key moments proved decisive. The par-3 3rd offered a rare chance at momentum, with Tomasi and Henson both walking away with pars, while much of the field gave shots back. The par-3 7th shifted control, as Tomasi’s bogey kept Ironwood steady while others faltered, and the closing par-4 9th sealed the outcome when Brice Coleman knocked down a confident par to secure the team edge.
Ironwood’s ability to spread scores across its lineup proved the difference, while Barry Goldwater relied on Henson’s anchor round to stay in the fight. On a course that demands precision and patience, both squads showed flashes of strong play, and with the Eagles pulling out the seven-stroke win, this matchup sets the tone for a competitive season in the West Valley.
