Basha Pulls Away Late for 37-26 Victory Over Chandler

Basha and Chandler traded scores, turnovers and momentum throughout Saturday night's varsity matchup at Basha High School before the Bears pulled away in the fourth quarter for a 37-26 victory.

Chandler struck first after taking the opening kickoff. Quarterback No. 7 Will Mencl connected with No. 10 Easton Arreola on a long pass that moved the Wolves into Basha territory.

Chandler continued the drive before Mencl found No. 23 David Douglas for a 7-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was unsuccessful, giving Chandler a 6-0 advantage.

Basha responded on its first scoring drive. No. 2 Jaden Baldwin hauled in a 5-yard touchdown reception to even the score at 6-6. The Bears attempted a two-point conversion but were unable to convert.

The teams entered the second quarter tied at six.

Basha began creating more opportunities in the second. No. 6 Noah Roberts broke a long run that moved the Bears into Chandler territory, although the drive eventually ended with a missed field goal.

The Bears found the end zone later in the quarter when No. 88 Makai Nelson caught a touchdown pass. The extra point gave Basha its first lead at 13-6.

Chandler answered quickly.

Mencl connected with No. 4 Maxwell Sprott for a 50-yard touchdown reception, and No. 33 Ryan Zima converted the extra point to tie the game at 13-13.

Basha answered again before halftime, with Nelson hauling in his second receiving touchdown of the quarter. The Bears converted the PAT to take a 20-13 advantage into halftime.

Chandler came out of the break and erased the deficit.

No. 2 Kaydon Gray caught a touchdown pass for the Wolves in the third quarter, and Zima's successful PAT tied the game at 20-20.

The Bears' defense then delivered one of the biggest plays of the night.

Chandler No. 1 Jai Jones lost the football after Basha No. 9 Marc Duerson III knocked it loose. Basha No. 1 Tre Kennard recovered the fumble and returned it for a touchdown, breaking the tie and putting the Bears back in front.

The successful extra point made it 27-20 Basha.

The third quarter continued with a chaotic stretch of turnovers and special-teams plays.

Chandler No. 0 Iona Kupu blocked a Basha punt, with the ball striking him in the helmet during the play.

Chandler then lost the football on the following possession, and Duerson came away with the recovery for Basha.

Chandler No. 20 Tamatoa Sauni nearly created another turnover when he tipped a pass and came close to an interception.

Later, Basha's Nelson fielded a punt and began the return before losing the football. Chandler No. 14 Maximus Washington recovered it for the Wolves.

Despite the back-and-forth turnovers, Basha carried a 27-20 lead into the fourth quarter.

Chandler immediately made things interesting.

Gray caught his second touchdown of the second half, pulling the Wolves within one at 27-26. Chandler attempted the extra point, but Basha No. 33 Jackson Oliver blocked the kick to preserve the Bears' one-point advantage.

Basha responded with points of its own.

No. 20 Mikey Barth converted a field goal to extend the Bears' lead to 30-26.

The Basha defense then came up with another important stop, preventing Chandler from regaining the lead and giving the Bears an opportunity to create separation.

No. 6 Noah Roberts delivered the final touchdown for Basha with a rushing score, and the successful extra point pushed the Bears' advantage to 37-26.

Basha also continued generating offensive plays late in the game, including a 23-yard reception by No. 3 Christian Diaz.

Chandler No. 4 Maxwell Sprott answered with a big run as the Wolves continued battling, but Basha kept Chandler from adding another score.

The Bears ultimately scored the final 10 points after Chandler had pulled within one early in the fourth quarter.

Basha's victory featured contributions throughout the lineup. Baldwin opened the Bears' scoring with a first-quarter touchdown reception, Nelson caught two touchdowns in the second quarter, and Roberts contributed on the ground before adding the late rushing touchdown.

Defensively, Duerson forced the third-quarter fumble that Kennard recovered and returned for a touchdown, then later came away with another Chandler fumble. Oliver's blocked extra point protected Basha's one-point fourth-quarter lead, while Barth's field goal gave the Bears additional breathing room.

After battling to a 20-20 tie in the third quarter and holding only a one-point advantage early in the fourth, Basha closed strong to secure the 37-26 victory over Chandler.
