Basha Pulls Away From Liberty for 30-22 Victory

Basha defeated Liberty 30-22 Friday night in a 6A Southern varsity football matchup at Basha High School.

The matchup featured two highly ranked 6A programs, with Liberty entering ranked No. 2 in the division and Basha ranked No. 4.

The teams traded touchdowns in the opening quarter. Liberty's No. 2 found the end zone, followed by a successful extra point from No. 33. Basha answered with a touchdown from No. 8, and No. 28 converted the extra point to make it 7-7 after the first quarter.

Liberty moved ahead in the second quarter behind a touchdown from No. 0. No. 33 added the extra point to give the Lions a 14-7 advantage.

Basha cut into the deficit with a field goal from No. 20, sending the Bears into halftime trailing 14-10.

The third quarter changed the game.

Basha's No. 6 scored a touchdown to help the Bears move in front, with No. 20 converting the extra point. No. 4 followed with another Basha touchdown, and another successful extra point from No. 20 extended the Bears' lead.

Basha scored 14 unanswered points in the third quarter and entered the fourth leading Liberty 24-14.

The Bears continued adding points through the kicking game in the final quarter. No. 20 connected on two field goals, including a 54-yard field goal, pushing Basha's total to 30 points.

Liberty continued fighting late. No. 88 scored a touchdown for the Lions before No. 2 converted the two-point attempt, bringing Liberty within eight.

Basha held on from there to secure the 30-22 victory.

Basha sophomore defensive lineman Hayden Williams, No. 75, spoke after the win about his performance and the Bears' effort.

"I feel great," Williams said.

When asked about the best part of his performance, Williams highlighted his involvement on a turnover, including making a tackle following one of the interceptions.

Basha finished the night with a 30-22 victory over Liberty in a matchup between two of the division's highly ranked programs. After trailing 14-10 at halftime, the Bears used a 14-point third quarter and two fourth-quarter field goals to complete the comeback.
