Coyotes Run Past Goldwater

The Friday night lights at Barry Goldwater High School set the stage for a fast start by Campo Verde, and the Coyotes wasted no time jumping ahead in their 35–12 victory over the Bulldogs on September 19.

Campo Verde blitzed out of the gate with a 28-point first quarter, turning the opening minutes into a highlight reel. Junior quarterback Jonah Lubno had his fingerprints all over it, throwing for 152 yards and two touchdowns while also breaking off a 70-yard run that set up points. His top target was senior Carter Haygood, who caught a 67-yard bomb for a score and added 101 all-purpose yards on the night. Junior receiver Easton Bakutis hauled in a touchdown of his own, while sophomore back Marek Bradley and junior Brody Stickle both found the end zone on the ground. Bradley’s burst of speed carried him to 102 rushing yards on just seven carries, including a 65-yard touchdown run.

After the fireworks, Campo Verde’s defense slammed the door shut. Senior linebacker Drew Pollard anchored the front with 13 total tackles and a tackle for loss, while senior lineman Ryker Onken and sophomore Winston Wright each tallied stops behind the line of scrimmage. The Coyotes also won the field position battle—junior punter Scott Aholelei averaged 50 yards per punt, including a booming 65-yarder that pinned Goldwater deep. By halftime, the scoreboard told the story: Campo Verde 28, Goldwater 0.

The Bulldogs refused to fold, and sophomore quarterback Jorge Gastelum sparked some life in the fourth quarter. He connected with senior receiver Cale Drank twice for touchdowns, including a 15-yard strike that capped off a late scoring drive. Drank finished with 118 all-purpose yards, giving the Goldwater faithful something to cheer about despite the deficit. Junior running back A. Williams chipped in 56 rushing yards, showing flashes of power against a tough Coyotes front.

Campo Verde added one more score in the final quarter to close out the 35–12 win. With the victory, the Coyotes improved to 3–1 on the season, while Barry Goldwater dropped to 2–2.

The season so far has told two different stories for these teams. Campo Verde shook off its opening-night loss at Capistrano Valley with three straight convincing wins—36–6 over Ironwood Ridge, 38–12 at Sunnyside, and now 35–12 over Goldwater—establishing itself as one of the sharper teams in the Valley. Barry Goldwater, meanwhile, has been streaky. After a tight 18–14 win over Kellis in the opener, the Bulldogs fell in a heartbreaker to Deer Valley before bouncing back against Skyline. This week’s loss to Campo Verde showed both promise and areas to improve as Goldwater looks ahead to region play.

Campo Verde’s explosive start and balanced attack proved too much on this night, but both squads leave with plenty to build on as the season pushes deeper into September.
