Millennium Survives Defensive Battle Against Canyon View, Wins 6-3 in Overtime
Millennium defeated Canyon View 6-3 in overtime Friday night in a boys varsity football matchup at Canyon View High School. The 5A Desert West contest featured four scoreless quarters, several turnovers, missed scoring opportunities and a game-winning touchdown pass that allowed the Tigers to remain undefeated.
Both teams entered the matchup looking to make a statement in an important region contest. However, neither offense could find the end zone during regulation as the defenses controlled much of the game.
Canyon View nearly opened the scoring in the first quarter after completing a touchdown pass on fourth-and-10. The play was called back because of a holding penalty, taking away an early opportunity for the Jaguars.
Millennium responded with a drive into Canyon View territory, reaching the Jaguars' 25-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.
The first quarter also featured consecutive interceptions. Millennium defensive back No. 27 intercepted a Canyon View pass with 3:31 remaining, giving the Tigers possession at the Jaguars' 40-yard line. Just seconds later, Canyon View's No. 6 intercepted a Millennium pass, returning possession to the Jaguars.
Canyon View defensive player No. 40 and Millennium's No. 57 also recorded sacks during the opening quarter, helping keep the game scoreless.
The second quarter continued the defensive battle as Canyon View created multiple scoring opportunities but struggled to finish drives.
After forcing Millennium to punt from deep inside its own territory, Canyon View advanced to the Tigers' 4-yard line. The Jaguars attempted a field goal, but the kick was unsuccessful.
Canyon View later moved the ball inside Millennium's 20-yard line and eventually reached the 2-yard line with less than a minute remaining in the half. The Tigers' defense held firm, stopping the Jaguars on fourth down near the goal line and taking possession at their own 1-yard line.
Millennium's No. 14 also blocked a Canyon View field goal attempt during the second quarter, while Canyon View's No. 38 recorded a fumble recovery.
Despite several opportunities for Canyon View to take the lead, both teams entered halftime tied 0-0.
The third quarter brought more defensive pressure and another turnover as both offenses continued searching for a breakthrough.
Canyon View's No. 55 recorded a sack, while Millennium's No. 22 forced a fumble on a sack. Canyon View's No. 99 also recorded a fumble recovery during the quarter.
Millennium advanced into Canyon View territory during the third quarter, including a possession that reached the Jaguars' 34-yard line. However, neither team managed to produce points, sending the game into the fourth quarter still tied 0-0.
The final quarter featured some of the game's most dramatic moments.
Millennium opened the fourth quarter with possession in Canyon View territory but turned the ball over on downs at the Jaguars' 30-yard line.
Canyon View then put together a drive into Millennium territory, reaching the Tigers' 25-yard line with 5:43 remaining. Facing fourth-and-1, the Jaguars attempted to extend the drive, but the measurement showed they were just short of the first down.
Millennium regained possession, but Canyon View's defense continued creating problems for the Tigers.
Canyon View's No. 26 intercepted a Millennium pass and returned it approximately 50 yards for what appeared to be the game's first touchdown. However, penalties for roughing the passer and unsportsmanlike conduct erased the score.
It marked the second time Canyon View had a potential touchdown taken off the scoreboard because of penalties.
Later in the fourth quarter, Canyon View's No. 89 recorded another interception, giving the Jaguars an opportunity to put together a late scoring drive.
With less than a minute remaining, Canyon View advanced into Millennium territory, reaching the Tigers' 19-yard line before eventually preparing for a field goal attempt.
Canyon View kicker No. 3, Austin Honsa, lined up for a potential game-winning kick. Both teams called timeouts before the attempt, adding to the pressure of the moment.
Honsa's kick missed, sending the game into overtime with neither team having scored during regulation.
Millennium won the overtime coin toss, and Canyon View received the first offensive possession.
This time, Honsa delivered.
After missing his previous attempts, the Canyon View kicker converted a field goal to give the Jaguars their first lead of the night, 3-0.
Millennium then took possession needing at least a field goal to extend the game.
Facing third-and-9, the Tigers turned to quarterback No. 1 and receiver No. 12, Kadin Johnson.
The quarterback connected with Johnson for a touchdown pass, giving Millennium a 6-3 overtime victory and ending a game that had remained scoreless through four quarters.
Johnson, who scored the game's only touchdown, credited his teammates and coaches for trusting him in the deciding moment.
"My coaches just relied on me. My teammates relied on me. They knew that I was gonna get the job done," Johnson said following the victory.
Millennium's offensive coaching staff acknowledged that the Tigers struggled throughout the contest and credited Canyon View for its defensive performance.
"We didn't really play well to our talent level, but hats off to Canyon View. They played well," a member of Millennium's offensive staff said.
The coaching staff also pointed to turnovers and mistakes as major reasons the Tigers struggled to score during regulation.
"I thought we made decent adjustments at halftime, but at the end of the day, it was just Millennium beating Millennium," a coach explained. "We have to do a better job of not killing ourselves, not turning the ball over, doing the little things right."
Despite those struggles, Millennium found a way to make the deciding play when it mattered most.
One of the Tigers' offensive coaches praised Johnson and the quarterback for executing the winning touchdown.
"In the biggest moment of the game, that's when we thrive in," the coach said. "Our hats off to him and the quarterback for making a good pass."
The victory keeps Millennium undefeated heading into its upcoming matchup against Desert Edge, another important test for the Tigers.
When asked about the team's preparation, the coaching staff emphasized improving throughout the week and correcting mistakes from the Canyon View game.
Johnson also shared his confidence heading into the next matchup.
"We're not overrated, we're underrated," Johnson said.
When asked what message he had for Desert Edge, Johnson kept his response short.
"We're coming."
Millennium escaped Canyon View with a 6-3 overtime victory, but the matchup showed how competitive the 5A Desert West region can be. Canyon View's defense held the Tigers scoreless throughout regulation, while Millennium's defense delivered several key stops to keep the game within reach.
For Millennium, the win extended its undefeated season. For Canyon View, the narrow loss came after several missed opportunities in a game that was decided by one touchdown pass in overtime.
