Vista Grande Goes for Two, Stuns Central 36-35 in Overtime

Vista Grande faced Central in a back-and-forth Friday night battle at Vista Grande High School, and the Spartans ultimately put the game in the hands of senior No. 0 Traecynn Pauulu.

With everything riding on one final two-point conversion in overtime, Pauulu delivered, pushing Vista Grande past Central for a dramatic 36-35 victory.

Central struck first in the opening quarter and took a 7-0 advantage, but Vista Grande quickly found its response on the defensive side of the ball.

No. 3 Landen Gerrish recovered a Central fumble and returned it for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 7-6 after the extra point was missed.

Vista Grande’s special teams then created another opportunity by blocking a Central punt.

The Spartans capitalized, with Pauulu rushing for his first touchdown of the night to put Vista Grande in front 13-7 by the end of the opening quarter.

Pauulu struck again in the second quarter. His second rushing touchdown, followed by a successful PAT, extended Vista Grande’s advantage to 20-7.

Central refused to let the Spartans pull away. The Bobcats answered with a passing touchdown before halftime, trimming Vista Grande’s lead to 20-14.

The momentum continued shifting after the break.

Central scored through the air again in the third quarter and converted the PAT, moving back in front 21-20. It marked the first time Central had led since the opening stages of the game.

Another Central passing touchdown in the fourth quarter extended the Bobcats’ advantage to 28-20, putting Vista Grande in a position where it needed both a touchdown and a two-point conversion to stay alive.

The Spartans delivered.

Vista Grande found senior No. 11 Vondae Bostice for a touchdown reception. Bostice finished the game with four receptions for 52 yards and the score.

Vista Grande then converted the two-point attempt, tying the game at 28-28 and sending the matchup into overtime.

Central opened the overtime scoring with a rushing touchdown and successful PAT, moving ahead 35-28.

That left Vista Grande needing another answer.

Once again, Pauulu provided it.

The senior powered into the end zone for his third rushing touchdown of the night, bringing the Spartans within one at 35-34.

Rather than settle for an extra point and extend the game, Vista Grande went for the win.

The ball was put back into Pauulu’s hands on the two-point conversion.

Despite a high snap, Pauulu controlled the ball and fought his way into the end zone, giving Vista Grande the 36-35 overtime victory.

Pauulu finished with 11 carries for 64 yards, three rushing touchdowns and two successful two-point conversions.

After the game, he credited the players around him for allowing him to make those plays.

Pauulu admitted there were plenty of nerves before the final conversion, especially after the difficult snap.

Oscar Orduno also contributed through the air for Vista Grande, completing four of eight passes for 82 yards and a touchdown. Bostice led the receiving attack with 52 yards, while Ty Salazar recorded a 28-yard reception.

For Pauulu, the comeback and overtime finish showed what Vista Grande can accomplish when the Spartans continue believing in one another.

On a night filled with momentum swings, defensive and special-teams plays, fourth-quarter pressure and overtime drama, Vista Grande made the final decision itself.

One touchdown. One two-point attempt. One point separating the teams. And one 36-35 overtime victory for the Spartans.
