Deer Valley Stays Unbeaten With 48-0 Shutout of Mohave

Deer Valley remained unbeaten Tuesday night with a 48-0 victory over Mohave in a 4A Skyline girls varsity flag football matchup at Deer Valley High School.

The Lady Skyhawks set the tone early, with sophomore running back Elle Lehmann opening the scoring on a long touchdown reception. The score marked the first touchdown of Lehmann's career. Camille Hernandez converted the kick to give Deer Valley a 7-0 lead with 11:07 remaining in the first quarter.

Deer Valley's defense soon began creating opportunities of its own. Kaydence Nielson intercepted a Mohave pass near the 26-yard line with 30 seconds remaining in the quarter. Olivia Martin followed with a touchdown on a handoff, and Hernandez converted the kick to extend the lead to 14-0.

Nielson recorded her second interception of the opening quarter shortly afterward, giving Deer Valley possession near the 5-yard line. The Lady Skyhawks were unable to turn the takeaway into additional points, sending the game into the second quarter with Deer Valley ahead 14-0.

Neither team scored in the second quarter, and Deer Valley carried its 14-point advantage into halftime.

The Lady Skyhawks resumed their scoring in the third quarter. Nielson made a long reception during a Deer Valley scoring drive, and Hernandez converted the kick to push the advantage to 21-0.

Chloe Utter then added another takeaway for the Deer Valley defense with an interception. Martin scored her second touchdown of the night on the ensuing stretch, and another successful kick from Hernandez made it 28-0 at the end of the third quarter.

Deer Valley continued to pull away in the fourth. Utter recorded her second interception near the 40-yard line before Sierra H caught a touchdown pass. Hernandez converted the kick, extending the lead to 35-0.

Sierra H then contributed on the defensive side with an interception of her own. Abryenne Lacangan followed with a touchdown on a handoff, and Hernandez added the kick to make it 42-0.

Freshman Breanna Meyer closed out the scoring with a touchdown reception, giving Deer Valley its final 48-0 advantage.

The Lady Skyhawks finished the night with five interceptions. Nielson and Utter each recorded two, while Sierra H added one as Deer Valley kept Mohave off the scoreboard throughout the game.

The victory also included milestones for two of Deer Valley's younger players. Lehmann scored the first touchdown of her career to open the night, while Meyer capped the scoring with her fourth-quarter touchdown reception.

After the game, Lehmann said seeing defenders behind her motivated her to keep pushing on the play that resulted in her first career touchdown.

"Knowing that this would be my first-ever touchdown, it really motivated me to keep going," Lehmann said.

Lehmann said the moment was even more special because several members of her family were there to see it. With the Lady Skyhawks now 4-0, the sophomore is already looking toward what could come next.

"We're on a four-game winning streak right now, so I'm excited to see if we can continue that winning streak and make it to the playoffs," Lehmann said.

Coach Jesse credited Deer Valley's defense for taking advantage of the opportunities Mohave gave them throughout the shutout.

"The defense has been playing lights out every game. Tonight, they just capitalized on the opportunities they were given. Coach Capper has this defense locked in," Jesse said.

Following Deer Valley's 48-point performance, Jesse called Tuesday night the team's most complete game so far while emphasizing the importance of maintaining the same standard moving forward.

"Tonight was our most complete game so far. Winning 48-0 showed what we're capable of when our entire team is playing together. I want to see us continue to grow and stay hungry. Being 4-0 is something we're proud of, but we know there are still a lot of games left and a lot we can improve on. Now the challenge is consistency. I want to see us bring that same focus, energy and discipline regardless of who we're playing."

Deer Valley's shutout moved the Lady Skyhawks to 4-0.
