Dragons Walk It Off Against Scorpions

The West Point Dragons and Desert Edge Scorpions battled through a wild back-and-forth varsity softball game that turned into an offensive showdown, with West Point eventually pulling out a dramatic 9–7 extra-inning victory.

Desert Edge struck first and came out swinging. The Scorpions plated two runs in the opening inning and added another in the second to take early control. A. Fatigoni helped ignite the offense with two hits, including a triple, while Cat Mattingly stayed hot at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Desert Edge continued to pressure the defense with aggressive baserunning as G. Alvarez swiped two bases while L. Taylor, Mattingly, and A. Cantrell each added steals.

West Point answered in the third inning, putting together a three-run rally that erased the early deficit. The Dragons kept the pressure on in the fourth with another three runs to take their first lead of the game. Leilani Mendez powered the offense for West Point, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored while creating chaos on the basepaths with three stolen bases. E. De La Riva added three hits in four at-bats to keep the Dragons’ lineup rolling, and Audrina Paschke and Melody Chavez chipped in key hits to keep innings alive.

Desert Edge refused to go quietly. The Scorpions answered back with a two-run frame to tie things up again as the game continued to swing like a pendulum. Both teams traded punches throughout the middle innings with Desert Edge finishing the day with 14 hits while West Point countered with 17 of their own.

With the score locked late, the Dragons found the final spark. West Point pushed across the tying run in the seventh and then delivered the deciding blows in the eighth inning to secure the walk-off victory. Pitcher A. Chavez went the distance for the Dragons, throwing eight innings while working through constant traffic on the bases to help keep West Point within striking distance.

In a game packed with offense, momentum swings, and clutch hitting from both sides, the Dragons ultimately had the final word in an exciting extra-inning finish.
