Desert Sunrise Powers Past Sahuarita for 36-15 Victory
Desert Sunrise put together a strong offensive and defensive performance Thursday, defeating Sahuarita 36-15 in boys freshman football action at Desert Sunrise High School.
Desert Sunrise established control behind its rushing attack. No. 1 found the end zone on the ground twice, with his second rushing touchdown pushing the score to 12-0.
No. 2 added another rushing touchdown for Desert Sunrise, extending the lead to 18-0. Quarterback No. 17 then used his legs to reach the end zone, giving Desert Sunrise a 24-0 advantage.
Sahuarita answered behind No. 1, who scored on a quarterback sneak. Sahuarita followed the touchdown with a successful two-point conversion to cut the Desert Sunrise lead to 24-8.
The Desert Sunrise defense quickly made its presence felt on the scoreboard. No. 13 intercepted a Sahuarita pass and returned it for a touchdown, pushing the advantage to 30-8.
Desert Sunrise later added another score through the passing game involving No. 26, extending the lead to 36-8.
Sahuarita continued to battle despite the deficit. No. 80 broke through for a rushing touchdown as Sahuarita closed the gap, bringing the score to its eventual 36-15 final.
After the game, Coach Wehle highlighted the physicality his team displayed despite having limited preparation time during the summer.
“Physicality. We missed a lot of summer practices because of weather. I only had four weeks of practice, but my team showed out and exceeded my expectations,” Wehle said.
Desert Sunrise's rushing attack, defensive touchdown and passing-game score combined to produce a 36-point performance as the freshman team came away with the 36-15 victory over Sahuarita.
