Sierra Linda continued its undefeated season Friday night, defeating Desert Sunrise 54-12 in a 4A Southwest boys varsity football matchup at Desert Sunrise High School. The victory improved Sierra Linda's record to 7-0, marking the first time in school history the program has reached that milestone, according to head coach Roland Pierce.
Sierra Linda established control early in the opening quarter. No. 24 broke through the Desert Sunrise defense for a 10-yard rushing touchdown, giving Sierra Linda a 7-0 advantage. The same player added another rushing touchdown later in the quarter, extending the lead to 14-0 heading into the second.
Desert Sunrise responded in the second quarter when No. 2 connected on a touchdown pass, cutting the deficit to 14-6. However, Sierra Linda quickly regained momentum as No. 6 scored on a rushing touchdown to push the lead to 21-6.
Sierra Linda continued its offensive production when quarterback No. 1 found the end zone on a rushing touchdown, extending the advantage to 28-6.
The defense also contributed to Sierra Linda's dominant first half, with No. 7 recording an interception. Sierra Linda capitalized on its momentum as No. 24 added his third rushing touchdown of the night, sending Sierra Linda into halftime with a commanding 35-6 lead.
Desert Sunrise opened the second half with renewed offensive energy. No. 3 scored on a rushing touchdown in the third quarter, narrowing Sierra Linda's advantage to 35-12.
Sierra Linda answered with a passing touchdown to No. 15, extending the lead to 41-12 entering the final quarter.
The visitors maintained control throughout the fourth quarter. No. 24 recorded his fourth rushing touchdown of the game, pushing the score to 48-12. No. 6 followed with his second rushing touchdown, bringing the final score to 54-12.
Following the victory, Sierra Linda head coach Roland Pierce reflected on his team's historic start while emphasizing the importance of continued improvement.
"You know, I feel good. Made it to 7 and 0, 1st time in school history, but a lot to clean up," Pierce said. "We've had a few penalties and things that we didn't like, but we hit the drawing board tomorrow and it's back to work."
When asked how Sierra Linda prepares for the most important weeks of the season, Pierce emphasized maintaining the same approach regardless of the team's success.
"We just reload. We act like we haven't had success in the past," Pierce explained. "We kind of harp on the mistakes and the things that we can get better at and focus in there and just trying to get better every time we step on the field."
Sierra Linda finished the night with eight touchdowns, including seven rushing scores and one passing touchdown. No. 24 led the scoring with four rushing touchdowns, while No. 6 added two more.
The 54-12 victory kept Sierra Linda unbeaten at 7-0 and marked another milestone in the program's historic season.
