Desert Sunrise Tops Tempe 32-8 Behind Strong Ground Game and Defense

Desert Sunrise earned a 32-8 victory over Tempe on Wednesday night in a boys frosh football matchup at Desert Sunrise High School.

The Golden Hawks opened the scoring in the first quarter when No. 2 found the end zone on the ground, giving Desert Sunrise an early 6-0 advantage.

Desert Sunrise struck again in the second quarter. No. 2 added another touchdown, this time through the passing game, to extend the Golden Hawks' lead to 12-0.

Tempe responded with its first points of the night when No. 10 scored on a touchdown pass. The Buffaloes added the conversion to cut the Desert Sunrise advantage to 12-8.

The Golden Hawks' defense then made its presence felt. No. 26 intercepted a Tempe pass and returned it for a touchdown. The recorded game notes had Desert Sunrise leading 26-8 following the defensive score.

Neither team scored during the third quarter, sending the Golden Hawks into the final period with control of the game.

Desert Sunrise added its final touchdown in the fourth quarter when No. 19 scored on a touchdown pass, bringing the final score to 32-8.

After the game, Desert Sunrise frosh coach Daniel Wehle pointed to the ground attack as one of the team's strengths.

"Run game," Wehle said. "The running game's been working all season."

Despite the victory, Wehle said the Golden Hawks still have details to clean up, particularly on offense. He highlighted fundamentals and receivers getting set as areas that need continued attention.

Wehle also noted that Desert Sunrise has several players experiencing football for the first time this season, making their continued development an important part of the process.

"We have so many kids this year that have never played football," Wehle said. "The first year ever playing football."

With many of those young players still adjusting to playing under the lights, Wehle emphasized that the team continues to work on those fundamentals every day.

The Golden Hawks finished the night with contributions from their offense and defense, holding Tempe scoreless after the second quarter on the way to the 32-8 victory.
