Estrella Foothills Shuts Out Cibola 44-0 in Dominant Home Victory
Estrella Foothills delivered a commanding performance Friday night, shutting out Cibola 44-0 in a 4A West Valley boys varsity football matchup at Estrella Foothills High School. The Wolves combined defensive pressure, explosive offensive plays, and consistent scoring to secure the victory.
The Wolves wasted little time making an impact defensively. Junior No. 21 Nolan Roth intercepted a Cibola pass and returned it approximately 35 yards for a touchdown. No. 2 converted the extra point, giving Estrella Foothills an early 7-0 advantage.
Estrella Foothills continued applying pressure when No. 23 recorded a sack. The Wolves' defense and special teams added another two points when Cibola's punter kicked the ball out of bounds in the end zone, resulting in a safety and extending the lead to 9-0.
The offense followed with a 55-yard rushing touchdown from No. 3. Another successful extra point by No. 2 pushed Estrella Foothills ahead 16-0 at the end of the opening quarter.
The Wolves maintained their momentum in the second quarter. Senior quarterback No. 7 Mickey Raftery connected with No. 2 on a play that developed into a 40-yard touchdown, extending the advantage to 23-0 following another successful extra point.
Raftery and No. 2 connected again on a spectacular 40-yard reception that the stadium announcer described as a "circus catch," highlighting the Wolves' passing attack.
Estrella Foothills added another touchdown before halftime when No. 15 scored on a reception. No. 2 converted the extra point, sending the Wolves into the locker room with a commanding 30-0 lead.
The Wolves continued their offensive production in the third quarter. No. 1 hauled in a 20-yard touchdown reception, followed by a successful extra point, extending Estrella Foothills' lead to 37-0.
Estrella Foothills added its final touchdown in the fourth quarter when No. 0 found the end zone on a rushing play. No. 81 converted the extra point, bringing the score to 44-0.
With approximately seven minutes remaining, the game moved to a running clock as Estrella Foothills maintained its substantial advantage.
Cibola attempted one final offensive play with a Hail Mary pass from its quarterback, but Estrella Foothills No. 20 intercepted the throw, closing out the Wolves' shutout victory.
Following the game, senior No. 70 Seamus Pezzelle, who plays along the offensive and defensive lines, credited the team's defensive performance and ability to improve offensively throughout the contest.
"So the defense really showed up. We came out strong. We shut down the run," Pezzelle said. "Came to offense, we struggled a little bit in the beginning, and then we really honed it in together. We played as a team, and we finished strong."
When asked to recognize two teammates who stood out, Pezzelle highlighted Roth's defensive contributions and Raftery's leadership at quarterback.
"I feel like we all play as one player, but if I had to choose two players, I'm gonna choose one defensive player. Go with No. 21 Nolan Roth. He really showed up today," Pezzelle said. "And then as my offensive player, I'm going to go with Mickey Raftery."
With the postseason approaching, Pezzelle also shared the team's aspirations of earning a home playoff game and making a deep postseason run.
"We're just looking to host a home game in playoffs," Pezzelle explained. "I don't know if we've ever done that in the school's history, but I'm hoping that we can do that for playoffs and make a deep playoff run."
Looking ahead to the remaining regular-season matchups, Pezzelle emphasized the importance of competition and continued effort.
"Hey, man, I just want a hard-fought game, whistle to whistle, and just keep working."
Estrella Foothills finished the night with six touchdowns, a defensive safety, and a shutout performance. Roth's interception return set the tone early, while Raftery helped guide the Wolves' offense through a productive first half.
The 44-0 victory gave Estrella Foothills another strong performance as the Wolves continued preparing for the final stretch of the regular season and a potential postseason appearance.
