La Joya Community Pulls Away for 40-8 Victory Over Desert Sunrise

La Joya Community used a strong second half to pull away from Desert Sunrise for a 40-8 victory Friday night in a 4A Southwest boys varsity football matchup at La Joya Community High School.

The Lobos opened the scoring in the first quarter when No. 10 connected with No. 8 for a touchdown. No. 70 converted the two-point attempt to give La Joya Community an 8-0 lead.

Neither team scored during the second quarter, sending the Lobos into halftime holding the same 8-0 advantage.

La Joya Community added to its lead in the third quarter when No. 20 scored on a touchdown run. Another successful two-point conversion extended the Lobos' lead to 16-0.

Desert Sunrise answered defensively with a safety, putting the Golden Hawks on the scoreboard and cutting the deficit to 16-2 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Lobos took control in the final period. La Joya Community scored on a touchdown run and converted the two-point attempt to increase its lead to 24-2.

A Desert Sunrise fumble then turned into another La Joya Community touchdown when No. 50 returned the loose ball for a score. No. 11 converted the two-point attempt, pushing the Lobos ahead 32-2.

Desert Sunrise responded with its first touchdown of the night as No. 1 scored on a touchdown run. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful, bringing the score to 32-8.

La Joya Community closed the scoring when No. 10 connected with No. 6 for a touchdown. No. 10 then found No. 14 on the successful two-point conversion, giving the Lobos a 40-8 victory.
