Maricopa Takes Control Early in 38-18 Victory Over Sunnyside

Maricopa earned a 38-18 victory over Sunnyside on Wednesday evening in a boys freshman/sophomore football matchup at Maricopa High School. The Rams built a commanding 25-0 halftime lead behind explosive offensive plays and a defensive touchdown before holding off Sunnyside's second-half scoring efforts in 5A Southern competition.

Maricopa opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 16-yard touchdown pass to No. 1, giving the Rams an early 6-0 advantage. The opening touchdown established momentum for Maricopa as its defense kept Sunnyside off the scoreboard throughout the first quarter.

The Rams extended their lead in the second quarter when No. 26 broke free for a 55-yard rushing touchdown, pushing the score to 12-0. Maricopa's defense then delivered another major play as No. 0 intercepted a Sunnyside pass and returned it for a touchdown, extending the advantage to 19-0.

Maricopa continued to build its lead in the closing moments of the first half. With time running out, the Rams connected on a touchdown pass to No. 7, sending Maricopa into halftime with a commanding 25-0 lead.

Sunnyside responded in the third quarter when No. 11 scored on a rushing touchdown, putting the Blue Devils on the scoreboard and cutting the deficit to 25-6.

Maricopa quickly answered with another explosive offensive play. No. 1 broke loose for a long rushing touchdown, extending the Rams' lead to 32-6 entering the fourth quarter.

Sunnyside continued battling in the final period as No. 11 recorded his second rushing touchdown of the evening on a short run, narrowing the score to 32-12.

The Rams responded through the passing game, connecting with No. 0 on a short touchdown reception to extend their advantage to 38-12.

Sunnyside added one final touchdown when No. 11 scored on another short rushing play, completing his third rushing touchdown of the night and bringing the final score to 38-18.

Maricopa's offensive production featured contributions from several players, including rushing touchdowns by No. 26 and No. 1, along with touchdown receptions by No. 1, No. 7, and No. 0. Defensively, No. 0 provided a major highlight with an interception returned for a touchdown.

Following the victory, Maricopa's coach expressed satisfaction with his team's performance, particularly the execution on both sides of the football.

"It feels really good, man. I was very pleased with our execution both sides of the ball, especially the defense," the coach said.

With two games remaining in the season, the coach emphasized the importance of continued development among the team's younger players, many of whom are still gaining experience with the sport.

"I'm starting to see some of these younger players who are brand new to football gain their confidence," he explained. "And so I think after the confidence, we're going to see better play and better learning."

The coach also outlined his expectations for the final stretch of the season, balancing the desire for victories with the long-term development of his players.

"Definitely two more wins I want to see, but also just improvement because these guys are young, and that's the name of the game, is just development."

Maricopa's 38-18 victory highlighted the Rams' ability to generate points through both offense and defense while continuing to develop their young roster. With two games remaining, Maricopa will look to build on the performance and carry its momentum into the final weeks of the season.
