Maricopa Shuts Down Youngker in 19-3 Victory

Maricopa overcame an early deficit and held Youngker scoreless over the final three quarters to earn a 19-3 victory Thursday night in girls varsity flag football at Maricopa High School.

Youngker opened the game by scoring three points in the first quarter, taking an early 3-0 advantage over the Rams.

Maricopa responded in the second quarter with its biggest offensive stretch of the night. The Rams scored 13 unanswered points before halftime, turning the three-point deficit into a 13-3 lead.

Maricopa continued to build its advantage after halftime, adding six more points in the third quarter to extend the lead to 19-3.

The Rams' defense kept Youngker off the scoreboard throughout the second, third and fourth quarters. Neither team scored in the final quarter, allowing Maricopa to close out the 19-3 victory.

After the game, senior wide receiver No. 35 Londyn Chandler credited the Rams' blocking and execution for helping the offense succeed.

“Just the blocking, having blocks and being able to execute the plays,” Chandler said.

Junior wide receiver No. 4 Zena Palmer also pointed to the contributions of new players and their ability to execute.

“We pulled in new people and they were able to execute correctly and do what they needed to do,” Palmer said.

Maricopa finished the night with 19 unanswered points after Youngker's opening-quarter score, securing the 19-3 victory at home.
