Millennium Shuts Out Betty H. Fairfax 42-0 in Season Opener

Millennium opened its regular season with a dominant performance Friday night, shutting out Betty H. Fairfax 42-0 at Betty H. Fairfax High School.

The Tigers scored six touchdowns across the night, including a 28-point second quarter, while their defense kept the Stampede off the scoreboard for all four quarters.

Millennium opened the scoring in the first quarter when No. 6 found the end zone for the Tigers. Kicker No. 38 Jackson Rogers converted the extra point, giving Millennium a 7-0 advantage after the opening quarter.

The Tigers' offense exploded in the second.

No. 0 helped get the offense moving with a 20-yard reception from No. 13 before later finding the end zone on a receiving touchdown. Rogers converted the extra point to extend Millennium's lead.

No. 6 then broke free for a 60-yard rushing touchdown, his second score of the night. Rogers again converted the PAT as Millennium continued building its advantage.

Special teams also provided a spark. No. 3 fielded a Fairfax punt and returned it approximately 30 yards, fighting through multiple defenders during the return and helping put Millennium in position to keep the pressure on.

No. 20 became the next Tiger to reach the end zone, scoring on a 20-yard receiving touchdown. Rogers added another successful extra point.

No. 6 completed Millennium's massive second quarter with another rushing touchdown, this time from 20 yards out. Rogers converted the PAT, giving the Tigers a 35-0 halftime lead.

Quarterback No. 16 Cason Lanzarotto described the opening quarter as a slower start while Millennium worked through its early-game jitters, but said the Tigers found their rhythm in the second quarter.

Lanzarotto credited Millennium's offensive success to trusting the athletes around him and relying on the offensive line to give the offense opportunities to make plays.

That trust was evident throughout the first half as Millennium produced touchdowns through both the running and passing games.

No. 20 nearly added another touchdown before halftime when Lanzarotto connected with him on a play that ended in the end zone. The score was called back because of an offensive push-off penalty, keeping Millennium's halftime advantage at 35-0.

The Tigers did not score in the third quarter, but they continued producing opportunities on the ground. No. 20 delivered one of the quarter's biggest offensive plays with a 40-yard run.

With Millennium holding a commanding advantage, the second half moved under a running clock.

The Tigers experienced a rare offensive mistake in the fourth quarter when the ball came loose on a fumble, but No. 71 quickly recovered it for Millennium and prevented Fairfax from taking possession.

Millennium then added its final touchdown of the night when No. 20 scored on a rushing play. Rogers converted another extra point to complete the scoring at 42-0.

Rogers' consistency on special teams played a role throughout the victory. The Millennium kicker converted the Tigers' extra-point opportunities as the offense repeatedly found the end zone.

After the game, Rogers pointed to Millennium's chemistry across offense, defense and special teams as one of the reasons for the Tigers' performance.

He said the team approached the game with constant pressure and effort, carrying a mindset from the coaching staff that the score remained 0-0 and that Millennium needed to continue playing without letting up.

That approach helped produce a complete opening-night performance.

Millennium's offense scored in three of the four quarters, its special teams contributed both successful kicks and a significant punt return, and the Tigers' defense completed the night without allowing a point.

No. 6 finished with three touchdowns, including rushing scores of 60 and 20 yards. No. 20 contributed touchdowns through both the air and on the ground while also producing a 40-yard run. Rogers completed the scoring opportunities following each of Millennium's six touchdowns.

For Lanzarotto, the opening victory was only the beginning. The quarterback said Millennium's goal is to improve each day, both mentally and physically, with the larger objective of continuing to stack victories throughout the season.

After a 7-point opening quarter, Millennium erupted for 28 points in the second, entered halftime ahead 35-0 and added its final touchdown in the fourth to complete a 42-0 shutout victory over Betty H. Fairfax.
