Coach & Athlete Interviews

Postgame thoughts, team culture, and athlete perspectives from Section 7 Girls Weekend.

Coach Interviews

Coach Interview

BJ Humphreys

Head Coach, Rocky Mountain Girls Basketball | Idaho

Interview by Lucky Monster Team Member: Colin

Rocky Mountain High School made the trip from Idaho to Arizona Athletic Grounds with more on the agenda than basketball. For Head Coach BJ Humphreys, Section 7 was an opportunity for his girls to build the kind of connection that carries into the season.

“That’s 100% the reason we’re down here,” Humphreys said. “To build that culture and camaraderie amongst our team.”

The travel itself became part of the experience. Time together in airports, on the plane, at the hotel, and between games gave the Grizzlies a chance to grow closer off the court while competing against new opponents in Arizona.

Rocky Mountain opened the weekend with a 45–35 win over McClintock. Humphreys credited his team’s defensive identity, built around pressure, help-side defense, contesting perimeter shots, and rebounding. He also recognized McClintock’s talent, pointing to its dynamic point guard and versatile post presence.

After a full day of basketball, Coach Humphreys had one more team-building surprise ready: a trip to Topgolf. For Rocky Mountain, the tournament was about competing hard, enjoying Arizona, and leaving with a stronger bond than when they arrived.

Coach Interview

Kristen Clyder

Head Coach, Sunnyslope Girls Basketball | Arizona

Interview by Lucky Monster Team Member: Colin

Sunnyslope Head Coach Kristen Clyder saw plenty to build on during her team’s Section 7 matchup against Snow Canyon, even after a tough result on the scoreboard.

In her third season leading the Vikings, Clyder said her team came into the game prepared and connected. “The girls showed up ready to go, dialed in, and communicated very well,” she said. She also shared how proud she was of the younger players stepping into the moment, especially with a roster still gaining experience at this level.

Sunnyslope fought to compete in the second half, but Clyder felt the group struggled to find its rhythm and allowed Snow Canyon to create separation. Still, the game offered a valuable learning moment for a program that had seven of 14 players experiencing Section 7 for the first time.

For Clyder, that experience matters. Facing unfamiliar competition, playing in a high-energy tournament setting, and learning how to respond when a game gets away are all part of the growth. The Vikings may not have found the flow they wanted against Snow Canyon, but they left the floor with lessons that can carry into the next opportunity.

Athlete Interviews

Athlete Interview

Amaya Ribbens-Brown

Millennium Girls Basketball | Arizona

Interview by Lucky Monster Team Member: Colin

Position: Point Guard / Guard
Height: 6’3”
Class: Freshman
Season Stats: 25 games played, 211 points, 130 rebounds, 26 assists, 28 steals, and 19 blocks

Millennium freshman Amaya Ribbens-Brown brought a clear mindset into Section 7: play together, make the right decision, and put the team first.

Coming off Millennium’s opening win over Mandan, Ribbens-Brown said the team’s focus was to set the tone immediately against an opponent from North Dakota. “Let’s hit them first,” she said. Millennium did exactly that, coming out aggressive and playing with the connected, composed style that defined its season.

For Ribbens-Brown, the expectation for the weekend went beyond simply chasing wins. “We all play together as a team,” she said. “We all make the right decisions, pass first rather than score first, and just put each other first instead of yourself.”

At 6-foot-3, the freshman guard brings a rare combination of size and versatility to Millennium’s lineup. Her season production, including 211 points, 130 rebounds, 28 steals, and 19 blocks, reflects the kind of all-around impact she can make on both ends of the floor.

With an undefeated region title behind them and college coaches watching from the sidelines, Millennium entered the tournament with confidence. Ribbens-Brown’s message stayed simple: stay connected, compete hard, and keep moving forward together.
