Vista Grande Holds Off Desert Sunrise for 36-28 Victory

Vista Grande built a commanding advantage before holding off a second-half Desert Sunrise comeback to earn a 36-28 victory Wednesday night at Vista Grande High School.

Vista Grande struck first behind No. 32, who found the end zone to give the Spartans a 6-0 advantage. No. 32 scored again on a rushing touchdown as Vista Grande extended its lead to 13-0 before halftime.

The Spartans continued adding to their advantage in the second half. No. 31 scored on the ground to push Vista Grande ahead 21-0 before the defense added another touchdown with a pick-six, extending the lead to 28-0.

Desert Sunrise responded through the air, scoring its first touchdown of the game and adding the conversion to cut the deficit to 28-8.

Vista Grande answered with another rushing touchdown from No. 32. The score gave No. 32 his third touchdown of the game and pushed the Spartans' advantage to 36-8.

Desert Sunrise refused to go away.

A rushing touchdown brought the Golden Hawks within 36-14 before a punt-return touchdown and conversion cut Vista Grande's lead to 36-22.

Desert Sunrise continued its comeback attempt when No. 2 connected for another passing touchdown, trimming the deficit to just eight points at 36-28.

Vista Grande's early advantage ultimately proved enough.

After building a 28-point lead, the Spartans survived Desert Sunrise's late surge to secure the 36-28 victory.
