Vista Grande Rallies in Fourth Quarter to Defeat Sunnyside 10-7

Vista Grande spent three quarters searching for a breakthrough Friday night before a fourth-quarter surge turned the game around and lifted the Spartans to a 10-7 road victory over Sunnyside.

Sunnyside opened the night with control of the football and the clock, putting together a 16-play, eight-minute drive that ended with the first touchdown of the game. The successful extra point gave the Blue Devils an early 7-0 advantage.

The opening touchdown proved to be the only scoring of the first half. Neither offense found the end zone during the second quarter, and Sunnyside carried its 7-0 advantage into halftime.

The game was then interrupted by weather, with a rain delay beginning at approximately 8:10 p.m. Play resumed at approximately 9:15 p.m., sending both teams back onto the field for a second half that would become increasingly defined by turnovers and defensive stops.

Vista Grande began creating opportunities in the third quarter. With 3:16 remaining, the Spartans recovered a Sunnyside fumble and took possession with a chance to cut into the deficit.

Sunnyside responded defensively, stopping Vista Grande on fourth-and-7 with 1:42 remaining in the third. The Spartans' defense answered once again before the quarter ended, forcing another Sunnyside fumble with just 21 seconds remaining.

Despite those opportunities, Vista Grande remained scoreless through three quarters, and Sunnyside entered the fourth still holding a 7-0 lead.

That changed with 8:39 remaining. Vista Grande converted a field goal for its first points of the night, trimming Sunnyside's advantage to 7-3 and turning the final minutes into a one-possession game.

The Spartans' defense quickly put the ball back into the hands of the offense. Vista Grande forced Sunnyside into a four-and-out, regaining possession with 5:53 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Then came the play that changed the night. With 4:03 left, No. 11 Vonde Bostice caught a pass and broke free for an 80-yard touchdown reception, giving Vista Grande its first lead of the game.

The PAT was successful, completing the 10-point fourth-quarter swing and putting the Spartans ahead 10-7.

Vista Grande still had to protect the lead, and its defense answered one final time. Sunnyside regained possession looking for a late response, but No. 23 Kiki delivered a key sack near the 1-yard line. The defensive pressure eventually forced Sunnyside to punt the ball back to Vista Grande with 2:06 remaining.

The Spartans took over with the lead and closed out the remaining time, completing a comeback after being held scoreless for the first three quarters.

Vista Grande's defense played a major role in keeping the game within reach. The Spartans created multiple third-quarter turnovers, made critical stops and prevented Sunnyside from scoring again after its opening touchdown drive.

Vista Grande then capitalized when its offense finally broke through, scoring all 10 of its points in the fourth quarter.

After the game, Bostice spoke with Lucky Monster Magazine about the 80-yard touchdown that ultimately provided the winning points.

“I stepped back and caught it. I ran up field, saw nobody, and then I almost got tackled actually,” Bostice said. “I tripped and then recovered, and I just busted it out and just ran.”

Even after making the game's biggest offensive play, Bostice focused on where the Spartans could continue improving.

“Definitely our conditioning, and we need to be finishing through every play and, you know, fighting back basically,” Bostice said.

Vista Grande had spent most of the night playing from behind, but the Spartans stayed within striking distance until their opportunity arrived. A field goal started the fourth-quarter rally, Bostice's 80-yard touchdown provided the lead, and the defense finished the job as Vista Grande completed the 10-7 comeback victory.
