Walden Grove Pulls Away in Second Half for 27-0 Win Over Vista Grande
Walden Grove used a strong second half to pull away from Vista Grande for a 27-0 victory Friday night in a 5A Sonoran varsity football matchup at Walden Grove High School.
Vista Grande's defense kept the game close throughout the first half, limiting Walden Grove to a pair of field goals despite the Red Wolves having opportunities to extend their lead.
Walden Grove opened the scoring with 6:22 remaining in the first quarter when No. 0 connected on a 39-yard field goal to give the Red Wolves a 3-0 advantage.
Vista Grande's defense and special teams continued to hold firm in the second quarter. With 8:01 remaining, Vista Grande blocked a Walden Grove field-goal attempt to keep the deficit at three points.
Walden Grove later recovered a fumble at its own 10-yard line with 4:25 remaining in the half. The Red Wolves eventually added an 11-yard field goal as the half ended, taking a 6-0 lead into halftime.
The game began to swing toward Walden Grove in the third quarter as its rushing attack found the end zone.
No. 22 scored on a 2-yard rushing touchdown with 8:01 remaining in the quarter. The extra point was good, extending Walden Grove's lead to 13-0.
The Red Wolves struck again with 3:28 left in the third when No. 36 scored on another 2-yard rushing touchdown. Walden Grove pushed its advantage to 20-0.
Walden Grove delivered its biggest offensive play of the night in the fourth quarter. Starting from its own 19-yard line, the Red Wolves connected with No. 5 for an 81-yard touchdown pass. The extra point gave Walden Grove a 27-0 lead.
The fourth quarter also featured a major altercation involving players from both teams with approximately five minutes remaining. Play eventually continued as the game moved toward its conclusion.
Vista Grande dealt with multiple injuries during the game as Walden Grove completed the shutout and secured the 27-0 victory.
