Chaparral Rolls Past West Point in 61-0 Shutout

Chaparral delivered a dominant performance Friday night at West Point High School, scoring 54 points before halftime and shutting out the Dragons 61-0.

The Firebirds wasted almost no time establishing control.

Chaparral opened the scoring with a 10-yard touchdown pass to No. 1, followed by a successful PAT from No. 83.

After forcing West Point to punt, the Firebirds quickly returned to scoring territory. No. 1 caught another touchdown, this time from 14 yards out, and No. 7 converted the PAT to extend the lead to 14-0.

No. 1 continued making an impact on Chaparral's next possession, breaking a long run that moved the Firebirds to the West Point 8-yard line and setting up No. 2 for an 8-yard rushing touchdown. The successful PAT made it 21-0.

Chaparral's defense then joined the scoring.

No. 6 recovered a West Point fumble and returned it for a touchdown, pushing the advantage to 28-0 following the extra point.

The Firebirds continued creating turnovers later in the quarter. No. 20 recovered another West Point fumble, and Chaparral ultimately turned another fumble recovery into a defensive touchdown. The following PAT was unsuccessful, but the Firebirds had built a commanding 34-0 lead after the first quarter.

Chaparral continued its offensive pressure in the second quarter.

The Firebirds moved inside the West Point 20 before completing a touchdown pass. No. 83 converted the extra point to make it 41-0.

The game was later paused because of an injury, one of several injury issues West Point dealt with during the night.

When play continued, No. 2 delivered one of Chaparral's biggest special-teams highlights, returning a punt 45 yards for a touchdown and extending the Firebirds' lead to 47-0. The PAT attempt was unsuccessful.

With Chaparral firmly in control, the mercy rule was activated during the second quarter.

The Firebirds still added another touchdown before the break. No. 33 was credited in the game notes with the score, and the successful extra point gave Chaparral a staggering 54-0 halftime advantage.

The pace slowed considerably in the second half, but Chaparral added one final touchdown in the third quarter.

No. 33 found the end zone on a rushing touchdown. The Firebirds converted the extra point, increasing their lead to 61-0.

West Point continued battling despite the large deficit and the injuries that affected the Dragons throughout the game.

The Dragons also produced a defensive highlight in the fourth quarter when No. 25 recovered a Chaparral fumble.

Neither team scored during the final quarter, leaving Chaparral with the 61-0 victory.

No. 1 helped ignite the Firebirds' explosive opening quarter with two touchdown receptions and a long run, while No. 2 contributed both an 8-yard rushing touchdown and a 45-yard punt-return touchdown. Chaparral also turned West Point turnovers into points, including a defensive touchdown from No. 6.

No. 33 added a second-half rushing touchdown as the Firebirds completed the shutout. Chaparral scored 34 points in the first quarter and 20 more in the second, taking a 54-0 advantage into halftime before finishing the night with a 61-0 victory as the Firebirds continued their second season competing at the 5A level.
