Centennial Defeats Willow Canyon 3-1 Behind Strong Blocking and Aggressive Serving

Centennial earned a 3-1 victory over Willow Canyon on Monday evening in a girls varsity volleyball matchup at Willow Canyon High School. The Coyotes secured the 5A Northwest Valley contest with set victories of 25-20, 13-25, 25-22 and 25-13, overcoming a second-set loss to finish the match with back-to-back wins.

Centennial head coach Leah Orth credited her team's aggressive serving and strong blocking for helping secure the victory. Despite moments of inconsistency, the Coyotes relied on their defensive presence at the net and timely plays to regain control of the match.

Centennial Takes the Opening Set

Centennial opened the match with a 25-20 victory in the first set, establishing an early advantage over Willow Canyon.

The Coyotes' aggressive serving and blocking helped create opportunities throughout the opening set. Centennial maintained enough control to secure the five-point win and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Willow Canyon Responds

Willow Canyon answered in the second set with a commanding 25-13 victory, evening the match at one set apiece.

The Wildcats outscored Centennial by 12 points, producing their strongest set of the evening. The result shifted momentum toward Willow Canyon and forced Centennial to regroup heading into the third set.

Blocking Helps Centennial Regain Momentum

With the match tied 1-1, Centennial responded in a competitive third set, defeating Willow Canyon 25-22.

The three-point difference made it the closest set of the match, and the Coyotes managed to secure the win to regain a 2-1 advantage.

Orth highlighted Gabrielle Kresl and Kaia Mendez-Winston for their blocking performances, explaining that their contributions helped change the momentum of the match.

"I feel like our blocking was really good tonight and our serves. We were serving very aggressive. So those two things combined really helped us," Orth said.

The Centennial coach also recognized the contributions of the team's right-side hitters, including a player who had been brought up from junior varsity, along with the setter and outside hitters.

Orth emphasized that the team's defensive effort extended beyond blocking. Important digs helped Centennial keep rallies alive and prevented Willow Canyon from gaining additional opportunities.

Coyotes Close Out the Match

Centennial carried its advantage into the fourth set and finished with a decisive 25-13 victory, completing the 3-1 match win.

After the narrow third-set result, the Coyotes closed the evening with a 12-point margin in the final set.

The victory reflected the strengths Orth identified throughout the match, particularly blocking, aggressive serving and defensive effort.

Rather than identifying one specific turning point, Orth pointed to the team's ability to keep the ball off the floor as an important part of building momentum.

"I think some big digs really helped bring momentum, not letting balls hit the floor," Orth said.

Team Chemistry Remains a Focus

Following the victory, Orth emphasized the importance of team chemistry as Centennial continues its season.

She explained that staying connected, enjoying victories and maintaining the desire to win would help the Coyotes continue improving.

"I just think sticking together and enjoying the wins and wanting to win is gonna help us go further," Orth said.

When asked to describe her team in one word, Orth offered a lighthearted response.

"I would say right now it's chaotic," she said.

Despite that description, Centennial demonstrated its ability to respond after dropping a set, winning the final two sets to secure the victory.

The Coyotes finished the evening with a 3-1 win, supported by strong performances at the net, aggressive serving and defensive plays that helped shift momentum in their favor.
