Gators Capture 6A Championship Behind Root’s Shutout
Championship games are often decided by timely hits and clutch pitching, and Xavier College Prep delivered both on the biggest stage. The Gators combined opportunistic offense with a dominant performance in the circle to secure a 6–0 victory over Queen Creek and capture the 6A state championship.
For much of the game, runs were at a premium as both teams battled through a tense championship atmosphere. Xavier broke through in the second inning, manufacturing the game’s first run and gaining an early advantage. The Gators continued to apply pressure in the third, adding two more runs to stretch the lead and force Queen Creek into catch-up mode.
While the offense steadily built its cushion, Xavier’s defense and pitching never allowed Queen Creek to find momentum. Every threat was met with a timely out, and the Gators consistently made the plays needed to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.
The decisive blow came in the seventh inning. Holding a three-run lead, Xavier put together another strong offensive frame, plating three insurance runs to create separation and remove any remaining doubt. The late surge capped off a complete team performance and gave the Gators a comfortable six-run advantage heading into the final outs.
Angie Falls helped lead the offense, collecting two hits and driving in two runs. S. Jaramillo delivered a key extra-base hit and finished with two RBIs, while Sariah McNabb contributed a double and an RBI of her own. Noelani Romo scored twice and added a double, helping spark several scoring opportunities throughout the afternoon. Leah Jollineau also drove in a run as Xavier’s lineup made the most of its seven hits.
The story of the game, however, was Sydney Root’s performance in the circle. The sophomore turned in a championship-caliber outing, throwing a complete-game shutout while allowing just three hits across seven innings. Root struck out nine batters, walked only one, and consistently worked ahead in counts to keep Queen Creek’s offense from establishing any rhythm. Time and again, she delivered key outs when the Bulldogs looked poised to build momentum.
Queen Creek battled throughout the championship matchup and managed three hits, but Xavier’s combination of pitching, defense, and timely offense proved too much to overcome. When the final out was recorded, the Gators had completed a championship performance and secured the 6A crown.
